Notes: Implied Riku/Sora. The shounen-ai is so brief here, it's probably not noticable and can be taken otherwise.
They were outside, all of them now, not just the children, necks craned towards the sky. The only sound was the occasional cough or shift of sand when cramping muscles were changed to a new position. Riku couldn’t remember a time when the air had been more quiet.
Every hundred fifty years, the adults had said, the climate shifted cold due to some celestial disturbance. Riku, in his normal shirt and pants, couldn’t say he felt any difference. But the butterflies did, and so would shift their migratory pattern to pass through their warm stretch of islands. By the thousands, one had claimed, citing her grandmother’s tellings with reverent fervor. So many that if it were to rain, not a drop would hit the ground.
And so they had gathered, here out on the beach with the sun heated sand. Riku stole a glance at his best friend, Sora’s mouth hanging slightly open as his eyes surveyed the sky for any sign of the promised visitors. The boy had filled Riku with stories of the butterflies he would catch; how he would train them to carry him up and up, beyond the clouds and to the other worlds the children often wondered about. Riku had smiled but stayed silent, the disappointing truth held at bay by the sparkle in Sora’s eyes. The spark had faded now, obscured by Sora’s drooping eyelids. Then suddenly his eyes opened with a start and he gave a hoarse shout, Riku’s eyes following the line showed by his friend’s outstretched finger.
It started as a black line on the horizon, quickly growing into a fiery cloud that flapped and surged its way towards the waiting islands. In a minute the blue had been blotted out, the wind’s soft whistling drowned by the sounds of wingbeats. The world seemed to hold its breath, the very atmosphere spellbound.
After a pause Sora got up and, impervious to the dark tension, began to dance through the advancing insects, laughing as their wings tickled his exposed skin. The spell darkened, then dissipated, and the looks of frightened awe turned to smiles, eyes returning to the sky with new vision. Only Riku’s stayed on his friend, watching as the boy moved gracefully through the waves of butterflies, plots of capture having long left his mind in favor of unabashed glee.
The moment, an adult had said, when the oxygen around you has been replaced by wings; that moment will stay forever in your mind.
But the way that Sora looked right now, Riku knew, would stay forever in his heart.
Sorry it's so long. Hope you like it anyways!
