“YOU RIPPED IT!”
“I—I didn’t mean to!”
“I can’t believe you!” Ansem shrieked, his ten-year-old hand curling around the arm of his decapitated teddy bear.
His playmate glared, blue eyes narrowing as he took a challenging step forward. “Oh, please, it’s not like you’re too old for it!”
“How would you like it if I ripped your head off?” the prince growled lowly, his eyes flashing dangerously. He met the boy’s challenging step with one of his own, bringing them nose to nose.
But instead of being intimidated, Hans merely smirked, placing a fist on his hip. “Well, I am not going to be king. So I do not have to worry if I wish to carry around an old lump of stuffing or not.”
“He is not an old lump of stuffing! He is—”
“What is the matter, children?” came a tired, old voice, and both boys looked up to see the prince’s nanny approaching, faded dark eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Ah… Nanny…” Ansem breathed, but before he could open his mouth, Hans said loudly, “Our future king here is mad because I ripped the head off his teddy bear. We were just arguing about whether it was proper or not for him to still be carrying one around.”
Ansem shot him a nasty glare. Hans ignored it, of course.
The nanny’s lips spread into a warm smile, the wrinkles around her eyes crinkling further. “Now, now. If Ansem is a prince, and he is truly to be king, then it is his decision if he wishes to carry the bear, is it not?”
Hans frowned. This obviously wasn’t going the way he had wanted it to. “But… He’s too old…”
“And you are too old to be starting such childish fights. Now run along, your mother will be worried that you stayed out so late today.”
Once the boy had gone, disappearing around the corner with a last nasty look at the prince, the nanny sighed and knelt before him, reaching out and placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Do not listen to him, Ansem.”
“I’m not upset about that.”
“Then what is it, child?”
Ansem presented her the abused teddy bear, muttering in a sullen tone with his eyes downcast, “His head’s been ripped off… He hurts…”
“Does he? Then he should not fret for much longer, for I have some sewing materials.” She took his small hand in hers. “Come along. Let us go patch him up.”
Ansem’s eyes widened a fraction more, but his lips stretched into a brilliant smile. He nodded, all but dragging his nanny behind him as he headed for her quarters.
His headless bear bounced along at his side, its counterpart resting in Ansem’s other hand, button eyes content.
