Challenge: [052] Drown
Title: His Dark Majesty
Word Count: 226
Characters: Riku, Sora, Kairi
Notes: Set in the beginning of KH. Riku is a bit upset over the attention Sora has been giving Kairi.

For too long I have been drowning in their shadows.

I see the two of them together, their fingers barely touching, their mouths curved in a secretive smile. They adore one another and they aren’t even aware of it. The tide rises up to where the paopu trees grow and they run out to greet it. Storms shake the wooden boats and they still whisper about how beautiful the next day will be.

Immutable. Irrefutable.

I am left alone. I want to cry out, but my tears are selfish. The sun’s winking light mocks my solitude. This bright world holds no promise of the friendship I used to have with him. He has changed since that girl came into our lives, and I am now but a memory he has decided to erase. I wanted his love, but now I must find that somewhere else. If I stay here I will lose it completely.

When I am king, they will be the first to go.

Something stirs at my feet. As I look down, black tendrils coil around my ankles and tease their way up my leg in a gentle caress. I let it form over my body, and as it covers my head I let a out a gasp. It feels like it is pushing me underwater.

I do not struggle. I am not selfish.

I meant to leave a comment on this earlier, so I will now. I really liked this, especially the sort of conflict within Riku between a desire for power and the desire to let his friends be happy. The paragraph describing Sora and Kairi and the ending were my favorite parts.

I also like how the words 'immutable' and 'irrefutable' sound next to each other. It has a nice effect. ^^
