Challenge; Breaking
Title; Before the Storm
Word Count; 308
The adults always tried to warn them away, told them the ledges at the top of the castle were no place for children, that they were dangerous and to stay away.
But the no-longer children had long ago discovered that the words of their guardians were merely over-protective paranoia, and had been using the cracked and chipped balconies as their secret hiding places. Their own World.
It’s just the boys today, Aerith and Yuffie being occupied elsewhere on this slow, quiet day.
Cloud swings his legs over the edge, one hand gently resting on the broken guard railing, careful not to put too much weight on it. It’s the only thing they are truly cautious about here in their wonderland of sky, and he knows better than to push his seemingly poor luck.
Squall toys with a large piece of the same stone used to build the castle, looking back and forth between his hands and the failing rail. “Hey, step back for a second…”
The younger teen frowns but does as he’s told, scooting back and away, blue eyes glinting over drawn up knees. “What’re you doing?”
He strikes at the balcony without answering, bashing the stone hard at the only solid piece until with no sound at all, it gives away and crumbles into dust and shattered fragments over the edge and down down down until they sink under the surface of cloud tops and out of sight.
The blonde watches in silence, kicking at one of the smaller stones that rolled to a stop at his feet. “What was that for?”
“It was already broken.”
“Yeah, so? The king’s not gonna like you breaking his castle.”
He raises his arm and points off at the horizon. “Storm’ll just knock it over anyway.”
Cloud sighs and scoots back over, silently joining his friend in their destruction.
