In which I try my hardest to sympathize with Kairi. I'm a slash fan, I swear!

Title: Promise

Notes: SPOILERS for the end of KH. Shounen-ai so delicately implied, you'll miss it if you sneeze.



“Kairi, I’ll come back to you! I promise!”

Sometimes she awakes with the words ringing in her mind, chest burning with raw hope. ’He’ll come back,’ she tells herself. ’He promised he would.’ On the nights she dreams of the past she gets to see Sora’s face, and sometimes she greets the sunrise through tear-filled eyes.

But sometimes she dreams of things far away, violent and terrifying and hopelessly out of her control. Sora’s face is there, but now it’s contorted in fear or pain, breath haggard as he fights the monsters she hates him for seeking. It hurts, but her tears are caught somewhere between her resentment and worry, the ache too strong to be expressed. On the nights she dreams of the present, her eyes remain dry.

And all because he wants to find him. She wants him to be happy, for them both to be happy, but she knows they’re more likely to find death then joy in the shadows they left to pursue. Willingly left to pursue. ’If you loved him as much as I did,’ she whispers when she allows herself a traitorous thought, ’You would have forced him to stay. I would have taken care of him, he could have spent the rest of his life in peace. What do you have that’s so worth chasing?’

She begins marking the days on the wall, pushing aside her bed to make small, secret etchings in the corner. But the corner is soon too small, and her wall slowly becomes filled with them. They are no longer a comfort but a constant reminder, each slice of her whittling knife cutting through the plaster to chip at her already dwindling faith. ’He promised, he promised, he promised,’ she reminds herself when the urge to wake up and admit that he’s gone tugs at the fringes of her wavering trust. ’He promised he would come back, and he will.’

But at night, when she hears him call Riku’s name and journey ever deeper into the darkness, she feels the promise breaking.

Kairi is a roadblock, and there's no doubt she's trying to separate Riku and Sora (Ex: When she suggested she and Sora leave without Riku) but people do stupid, selfish things when they love someone. But yes, I tried my best to show that's she's a human with bith feelings and faults, instead of a bitch that gets in the way of Riku/Sora yumminess.

Thanks ^.^ I felt like challenging myself, and nothing is more challenging for me then writing from the POV of someone I naturally dislike. Glad you liked it.

Wow.. how awesome! Like the others here have said, that was really creative of you to do Sora X Riku from Kairi's POV, and I love how real you've made her feelings. (Hey, I'm a diehard yaoi and shonen ai fan, but I'm just sick of people hating the female characters only because they get in the way of their favorite pairings. (Though it is interesting from a sociological standpoint, since the vast majority of yaoi/slash writers are female themselves.) I like Kairi; she's a sweet character, and I like that she got her turn in the spotlight too.)

Thank ya! I wanted to try something different, and I don't think I've ever written from the POV of a character I didn't much like. (I'm guilty of that, but I try my best to see beyond the pairing they're disrupting, and into the person they are and what they go through. (I think it's because we see the "perfect" girl characters as imbodiments of our greatest enemies, the winners who bring out our insecurities) I still don't like the role Kairi fufills at all, but as a person I don't think she's that bad.)

Woah I'm a new member and I'm glad that I joined. That sorry was awesome and moving. I'm not a huge Kairi fan more of a Sora x Riku fan but that was brilliant.

XD Keyword "almost". There's only so much imagery and realistic emotion can do, eh?

Yeah, I figure everyone's got something to offer, and just because what they offer sucks! isn't exactly what you'd prefer doesn't mean they should be shoved off to the side and forgotten. Even though a lot of slash fans are against the female leads, I see way more flaming done by anti-slash people over yaoi pairings then slash authors over het ones. We'll grow up when they do XP
