Omigod.

Guess what?

I'm early.

:D

Challenge: [077] Martyr
Title: Lexaeus and the Brief Encounter
Word count: 567
Spoilers: Again, playing through CoM wouldn't hurt...
Notes: I didn't have to even cut it down this time! Win! :D *dances* Well, this was a somewhat cracky idea that I had been pondering even before the prompt, so maybe that's why I got it in so early -_-;... And yes, that is a stupid title. It'll make sense within context, though.

Lexaeus had been strolling through the golden wood on a world that seemed completely empty, although beautiful in a quaint fashion. Beautiful, yet useless; he was just about to conclude that this world had nothing in the way of hearts to offer and leave when he simultaneously felt something give way to the solid leather of his boot and heard a clatter of sticks. He looked down and saw two things: the first was a pile of sticks, a diaphanous dust cloud already settling about his feet, and the second was a blue smudge of cloth that seemed rather inconsequential until it looked up with doleful eyes and said, "Well, hello."

Lexaeus had never met a talking stuffed animal, but he had little reason to be surprised either, so naturally he stopped and gave the expected rejoinder. The two contemplated the other in silence until the smaller of the two sighed again. "I suppose I'd better get me 'n my house outta the way. Looks like you have better things to do today than waste time on little old me."

The hulking figure in black, perfectly bemused, stepped off of a heavily patched leg of blue. The small animal nodded his thanks with no great enthusiasm and started to gather his "house" together again.

Lexaeus watched the process of "moving" with some amused disinterest: first, the creature would nudge a few sticks around and shuffle in circles around the sad pile; next, he'd position himself like a fisherman rearing back to cast his bait, and then he would rather anticlimactically clamp onto one and trot a short distance away to, with a soft "phhut"-ing sound, deposit it onto the forest loam. It would then come back and repeat the process.

Six of the total eighteen sticks were displaced when Lexaeus spoke again. "Do you rebuild often?"

The creature stopped. "D'you mean my house?"

"Indeed."

It thought for a moment. "For as long as I can remember, I've been movin'. It's not the funnest thing in the world."

"Then why," Lexaeus pressed, "do you continue to build your house up again? I know as well as you that your shelter is far from well-constructed; it will fall back down every time."

"Thanks for bein' honest. I gotta make do without a pair of hands, you know." The stuffed animal seemed inutterably serious.

"Why don't you move in with a friend? You wouldn't have to work so hard anymore." Lexaeus did not know why he was suddenly so interested with the affairs of another living being. After all, all it was doing was carrying pieces of wood.

It shrugged in reply. "I've got friends, yeah. They don't mind takin' me in when it's rainin' and stuff, but... I gotta keep on tryin'."

"Don't your efforts and the time you spend ever seem like a waste? Why do you keep trying?"

Solemn black eyes looked up at the Nobody. "Because ya never know. One day, my house just might stand on its own, and then all the work I've done so far wouldn't be for nothin'. You know what I mean?"

Lexaeus pondered its words in silence, then, with an oddly satisfied air, said, "I see. Farewell, then."

"Same to you. G'bye."

On his report later that day, the Silent Hero wrote, "World has few inhabitants, thus garners little priority. Continue to other prospective worlds with greater population densities."

He wished he knew how he knew that the little blue animal would build a stable house before the Nobodies returned.

Wow. I love this. And it all seemed so IC too. It's hard finding Lexaeus fics, and this was just gold. I never expected to see him talking with Eeyore. And yet it's perfect. Their personalities match quite well. So sad I didn't find this earlier. And so happy I found it now.^^

Good show!
