Challenge: [079] Close To You
Title: Now Similar
Word Count: 580 (*facepalm* I can't write Short.)
Notes: Riku, Namine. Around the prologue of KHII.
DiZ had failed to make introductions, and it was only after catching a white shadow along the blade’s edge of his vision that Riku begins where DiZ neglected.
Caught, cornered, the little girl keeps her eyes on her bare feet, sandals in hand to make less of a sound. He knows who she is, in a vague sort of sense. She is Sora’s mind witch.
“Namine,” is the name she whispers to him.
“My name is Ansem,” Riku says, stiffly, and his voice still catches on that word. She looks up at him, sharply, and it’s Kairi that frowns and searches his eyes.
“Liar.”
*
“So you’re waking him up,” Riku makes it sound like a question. She doesn’t turn around; she can see his curved reflection in the glass.
“When his memories are whole again, he’ll wake up on his own,” she answers. ‘Yes’, is what she means.
“There’s no quicker way?” And he doesn’t want to sound like DiZ but is conscious that he does nonetheless. The fleeting smile across her blank face suggests she perhaps forgives him for it. She places her palms above her, high on the glass surface, and pulls herself into a jump. Her lips press against Sora’s, or they would, if a layer of transparent wall and a foot of space on the inside did not interfere.
Gravity pulls them apart like a jealous lover, and she stumbles back a step. Blinking at Sora, then towards him, her sudden smile returns for a moment.
“It worked for Sleeping Beauty,” she says, almost shrugging, and Riku tries to burn away the image of Maleficent that surfaces to his mind in smoky green brilliance. Burn away the image of a sleeping, heartless Kairi that would not, would never wake.
*
“Sneak me in?” It is a favour, and the glance from slanted eyes proves she knows it. He’s seen Sora’s Other many times before, but not this version. The version that, in her witchy fashion, she smoothed and twisted into something new. He wants another chance.
“What’s in it for me then?” and it is not her voice that speaks the teasing question, but her voice, and Riku pinches his eyes shut because Kairi is not here at all.
“What do you want?”
“Your name.”
Riku returns from Twilight Town to the sound of her still tasting the two syllables against her tongue. Ree-koo. Ree-koo.
*
He's never seen someone's expression melt, but it's the only image that comes to mind when DiZ discovers that she has let Axel into the town. DiZ grips her shoulders, shaking them, and at her side her fingers fan apart, as if she could maybe fly from his grasp.
"I wanted to," is what she tells DiZ when he asks the inevitable question. It's the first time he's ever heard her use 'I'. DiZ is so startled his fingers slide off her skin. He might have even laughed a little, but her own surprised gasp surely drowned it out.
"Take her," DiZ says to him, Anywhere, Just Not Here is the silent continuation. Her palm is hollow in his but he takes it all the same. They reach her room before she dares say something else.
“Am I like her? Like Kairi?” she asks, and the quick fidget of her fingers tells what she wants the answer to be.
“Close,” he allows, here in the secret quiet. “You’re close to being like her. But you’re more close to You.”

Date: 2006-10-18 04:29 pm (UTC)Thank you so much, gah, you're such a total sweetheart. XD I like Namine. Many people don't seem to, but I think she's fun to play around with once you take here away from her crayons. And she DOES get a backbone (albeit a tiny one), making her a character that actually CHANGES throughout the games, which... when you look at it, makes her one in few.

Date: 2006-10-18 04:31 pm (UTC)THANK YOU. I always try to mess around with the challenge prompt and not to write the obvious. It's more fun that way, lol.

Date: 2006-10-22 11:09 pm (UTC)Kind of. Like Namine. And. Oh! *wibble*
I love Riku and Namine, they're so sweet and sad and tragic, and you captured that so well! And I love the way you tied in Roxas and Sora and Kairi like that, so smooth and there. Did I detect a hint of OT5, or is that wishful thinking? ^.^
And. I went to Oni-Con yesterday, and there were a couple of DiZs, and everytime I saw them my hand clenched around the hilt of my sword and I kind of growled. He is the only character I dislike in this game, and I love you for writing him so well. ♥
THERE IS SO MUCH AWESOME IN HERE. You are made of amazing.

Date: 2006-10-23 11:25 pm (UTC)I totally agree. It's impossible to get emotionally attached to DiZ in any context. I think Christopher Lee had a part in that... heh.
OT5? Not intentionally, but... you know, I'm sure subconsciously... XD

Date: 2008-08-16 06:09 am (UTC)When I first... well, not played, but had some vague experience with the game, I didn't like DiZ at all. AT ALL. Even though he was voiced by Christopher Lee. ♥ I hated his attitude towards Nobodies. Grr. Actually, I still hate that part of him. But one must admit that he had cause to hate Xehanort, at least, though that's hardly an excuse to extend that feeling towards ALL Nobodies. When he apologized to Roxas, though... gosh, I cried. I totally forgave him. I think writing "Depths" may have had something to do with it, too... there's only so long that you can write a guy without getting used to him --> liking him, at least a little bit.
But I think I'll always hate Yen Sid, unconditionally. ):
...hah. Sorry about that...

Date: 2008-08-16 06:04 am (UTC)There's another relationship that people don't think about. Riku and Namine had to interact. We know they did!
I'm having trouble getting to "Mapped." The link goes right to "Mister Penbrook" (which I'll read... probably tomorrow. ^^; It's late.)

Date: 2008-08-17 12:22 am (UTC)(Thank you for letting me know about the bad link. <3 Also about the lj theme change, cause I forgot it changes the entries as well, not just your main page, and I only wanted it to change on the main page. It's a pain to read fic on custom themes, so, yeah, thanks for letting me know. Fixed both issues; thanks for bringing them to my attention.)
