He had been great, once - the ruler of an entire world. And he had been loved, too - no harsh and ruthless dictator, but their wise and benevolent leader. His people trusted him. There was nothing he could not accomplish, no question he could not answer, no challenge he could not overcome.

Yes, he had been great. He had had his fairy tale. And now, this darkness was all that remained of his fallen empire.
