Challenge [099]: Sidequests
Title: Mission Priorities
Word Count: 375
Characters: Axel and Xemnas.
Spoilers: If you've played the first twenty minutes of KH2, you should be good.
“Come on, pleeease, Superior?”
Xemnas didn’t look up from the reports carefully laid out on the desk in front of him. “Axel, you have a mission and I suggest you attend to it.”
“Yeah, I know that,” the red head responded, gloved hands resting on the edge of the desk as he leaned over. “But this won’t take long! It’ll hardly interfere with my mission at all!”
“The answer is no, Number Eight.” Xemnas turned his chair slightly so he could get his reports back into enough light to read by. “You don’t need more distractions in your work.”
“Aaah, come on!” Axel leaned farther forward, his jagged shadow slinking across the page in Xemnas’s hand again. “Don’t think of it as a distraction. Think of it as, uh...a side quest!”
The paper lowered a fraction. “A... side quest?”
“Yes, exactly! You know, just a little something on the side of my regular mission! Doesn’t get in the way of anything, just might get us something good this time!”
Xemnas set the paper down. “Axel...” he said, his voice holding a quiet warning.
“I mean it!” Axel said, stepping back and holding his hands up to show his innocent sincerity. “Just a side quest! I hop in to Twighlight Town, take a look around for Rox– Number Thirteen, and then get back to work right away! Quick as that, I promise!”
“And if you find him?”
“We have a quick word, I assess the situation, and then haul his ass back here! Also simple.”
A sigh hovered on his lips, but Xemnas kept it from escaping. “Very well, Number Eight. You may have your... side quest.”
A fanged grin flashed across Axel’s face as a portal of darkness opened up behind him. “You got it, Superior! You won’t regret this, you’ll see!”
“See that I don’t, Axel,” Xemnas replied, picking his paperwork back up.
The darkness closed around Axel and he let the fake cheerfulness drop. Green eyes flashing with a cold light in the darkness surrounding him, Axel set out for Twighlight Town. Xemnas didn’t understand, but Axel didn’t expect him to. Finding Roxas was not just some stupid side quest. It was the only mission.
Next to finding Roxas, life itself looked like a side quest.
