Challenge: [102] Crash
Title: Lazy River
Word Count: 380
Notes: Axel, Roxas. One "bad" word.
Bellowing out clouds of white steam, boats trailed down the calm river, whistling cheerfully. Monochromatic cats and cows steered the boats, causing Roxas to look out into the grey distance for long moments, before hopping into the boat after Axel.
Grey water sloshed up onto the side, as the treads of Roxas’ boots softly hit the deck.
Axel chuckled, dark and low, when he glanced out at Roxas again, from under the shadows of his black hood. In response, Roxas glared, his black and white features turning down in a simplistic scowl, which only made his still-colorful friend grin more within the shadows.
“You know, maybe you should steer this thing… seeing as how you look like them and all,” Axel said, his hand resting on the boat’s steering wheel. “You might be a pro, like that cow over there.”
Axel pointed down stream, where Roxas watched a cow steering a boat, giving the wheel a loose, 360 degree spin, as his boat chugged forward in an impossibly straight line down the water way.
Roxas blinked.
“You see how they do it, right? They tap their feet to the music, whistle, and give the wheel a crazy spin. Because in this world, it’s all about your mind, and where you want to go.” Axel lightly tapped the side of his head, emphasizing his point.
Roxas glanced at Axel skeptically, before stepping up to wheel, his hands resting lightly on the steering wheel.
Axel stepped back.
“Now tap your foot, like you’re hearing music or something. They all look really happy when they’re steering. It’s like that pixie dust thing, Roxas.”
Roxas lightly tapped his foot, creating a soft echoing beat against the wood.
“This isn’t so bad, Axel.”
“Well… if it’s anything like fighting, you have great rhythm.”
“I guess you’re right.”
“You know, we’d better get going before that cat comes back. I don’t think he’ll like it so much that we’re borrowing his boat. Probably doesn’t even have the sense to know who we are.”
Roxas nodded, still tapping out a perfect rhythm. He gave the wheel a controlled, circular spin, imitating the cow perfectly.
Tap, tap, CRASH!
The boat jerked wildly, colliding violently into the dock.
Roxas clutched the steering wheel, staring blankly ahead in shock.
“…Fuck.”
