Two non-challenge drabbles today, both centered on the Hollow Bastion kids. Because they're so much fun to write as kids/teenagers/pre-KH.
Title; I Changed My Name
Word Count; 117
“You want us to call you what?”
He gingerly touched the barely healed scar, eyes closed in thought. “Leon. I don’t deserve ‘Squall’ anymore.”
“Look, kid, if this has anything to do with home…”
“Let me guess. It’s not my fault? Is that what you were going to say?”
The three recoiled at the teenager’s snap, but it was Yuffie that bounced back first.
“So. Leon, huh?”
A nod. Yuffie peered at him throughtfully.
“Well, you’ll always be Squall to me.”
“I think… Leon’s a nice name.” Aerith added gently.
“But Squall is…”
“Call me Leon.”
“Squall.”
“Leon.”
“Squall!”
“Whatever.”
Cid made a noise in his throat, thumbing his nose as he went back to work.
Kids.
Kingdom Come and its silly plot ideas are totally to blame for this next one.
Title; We Were Once Upon A Time
Word Count; 207
“May I try?”
Cloud frowned, concentration lost. The flower girl circled around to face him – when did she get here? – hands clasped behind her back as she peered up at him.
“Try what?”
Aerith smiled and tapped her fingertip on the buster sword. “I’ve never used a sword before.”
He blinked and looked at the weapon. It had taken him years to learn how to use it properly, she’d never be able to carry it…
“It’s really heavy. I don’t think you could even pick it up.”
She pouted, and Cloud felt his will falter.
“I’ll help you hold it.”
He guided her hands, smiling in response to her quiet laughter as he helped her lift the sword, his own hands warming against hers.
She pulled away eventually, face flushed from the effort, but still that sweet, gentle smile aimed only at him. “Guess I should stick to spells then, hm?”
“You’re good at it.”
“I’m okay.”
A small silence filled the room, and for a moment he turned away to return to his practice, but his eyes caught hers on more time.
“If you want… If you ever need me to… I’ll be your knight.”
A little light sparked in her eye.
“I… I’d like that.”
