Title: Loving the Beast

Spoilers/Rating: Yep, spoilers for KH1 and2.
Notes: Second entry. Belle's quote is an old proverb I read somewhere. I just thought it odd how they share that one quality in particular...

 

"You like someone because," Belle had said, when Kairi had asked about the Beast. "But you love them although." How awful it seemed at the time, to adore a monster. But Belle did, and she seemed like a smart enough woman otherwise, so the girl had just nodded and let her go on.

Maybe Kairi had been too young to understand it then, and a year had changed the way she looked at things. Maybe an age of fawning halfheartedly over rock stars and actors had finally lost its glamor. Maybe.

Or maybe that wasn't it at all.

Because she still remembered the face of her enemy, her kidnapper, with the sorry eyes of her dearest friend who couldn't quite meet her gaze. Because she could still feel the cold, oily dark of a Heartless in her arms, and the wish to be with it forever because she loved him too much to let him go. Because sometimes at night she still woke in a cold sweat, the night-shadows imitating prison bars and the wind whispering threats with Saix's voice, and shuddered with terror for Sora before she could care about her own safety.

But now Sora was safe and whole, Riku was himself, and the Beast was a Prince, and Kairi fingered the wedding invitation with the wistful smile of one who finally understands.
