Mr. Hinkel expected the two boys to struggle in school after missing almost two years. So he was surprised when Sora handed him a completed form for requesting exemption from a class.
He gave the form one glance, then a longer look. Then a glance back up to Sora's hopeful face, and then back down at the form.
"Well, Sora, while it's very impressive that you learned Chinese and French while you were away..." He coughed uncomfortably. "You also claim to be fluent in Arabic, Ancient Greek, Lion, Fish, and Computer Binary Code."
Sora beamed, and said hopefully, "So I don't need to take any language courses, right?"
This was definitely not the sort of struggle Mr. Hinkel was expecting. "Sora, um...I don't believe that 'Fish' is an actual language."
"Of course it is. How else would I have been able to speak it?"
"Dare I ask where you found the time to learn these various languages?"
Here Sora seemed to hesitate, and he rubbed the back of his head. "Well, I didn't exactly learn them...I just seemed to already know them."
Mr. Hinkel gave him an educator's victory smile. "Ah, well then. If you didn't really learn any of these languages, I see no reason why you should be exempt from learning one now." He handed the form back to Sora, who sighed in defeat. "I'll see you in Spanish next year."
