Title: Make it Look Easy

Notes: “A paopu fruit?”
“You wanted one, didn’t you?”
It's not a good idea.
Riku knows and does it anyway, arms outstretched, fingers splayed, anything to help him keep balance as he edges barefoot toward the top of the paopu tree.
He could be sitting down on the trunk, legs bracing against the mostly-smooth surface, and using his hands and butt to get further out over the water.
No- he'd look stupid, he thinks, as he bends at the knees and puts his hands over the upward-sloping trunk, clinging simian-like to the tree.
Riku doesn't like to look stupid.
That's why it's early, early morning and no one is out here- and the sun is only just rising and his visibility isn't what it would be in broad daylight.
He clings/climbs the tree, finally wrapping his legs around the trunk and reaching with one hand for the star-shaped fruit that would be yellow after sunrise. His fingers brush one of the lower points- the fruit wavers but holds fast.
Riku makes a small noise between his teeth, grimaces and pulls himself a little higher. When he still can't reach it, he tilts his body to the side; a little less distance between him and the prize. He can pinch the star point between two fingers now, but can't pinch hard enough to grip it, or even start to twist the stem.
He's out there, shifting minutely this way and that, for several minutes.
He's stubborn that way.
Finally it occurs to him- the other side of the trunk. Much closer to the coveted paopu. If he clings with both arms and both legs and slides himself around to the underside of the tree, he can reach up and grab the fruit.
He does it, clinging with already weary arms and aching legs- tight enough that his muscles are cramping. Riku stretches out his arm, clenches his jaw and reaches- and strains something- and with a determined wrench of his body, thrusts upward and closes his hand over the top point of the paopu.
The rest of his limbs let go and the stem snaps under the weight of a fifteen-year-old boy who might have benefited from a little more fear of falling.
He spends the next two hours drying in a sunny patch on the other side of the island.
Later on, Riku tosses the paopu fruit at Sora.
"C'mon- you know you want to try it."
The look on Sora's face just before he throws it into the ocean?
Totally worth it.
