Challenge: [133] Triumph and Tragedy
Wordcount: 428
Rating: G
Warnings: Sort'f spoilerish towards the end of KH2 past the Proof of Existence.
They can see it, far overhead. It glows, with hearts and with promise. The First (though a few Dusks have been since before him) has promised that it will grant hearts when it is complete, and it looks almost complete now. Surely the time will come soon, and they will go- maybe not to their homes, but to a warmer place than this, somewhere where the rain does not pour down so heavily.
A Dragoon is the first to notice the increase in the brightness of its glow, and calls all the rest to come out and see. Surely the time is now, and they crowd the streets and plazas in the city to watch and wait.
They do not have to wait long before it glows more brightly than ever, and then bursts into light. Some- most of them new- cover their eyes, or where they would be, in response, but it lasts only a few moments, and they uncover their eyes to watch hearts coming down in the most glorious shower they've ever seen. This must be the way their hearts are returning to them, they decide (for they have not been told how that was to be accomplished, not even the Sorcerers).
Catch them! one of the Dancers calls, and there is excitement and almost-laughter as they all reach out to snag the heart that surely must belong to them. A few are lucky, and leave once they can, but for most the hearts float just out of reach, vanishing once they touch the ground instead.
The shower is over now, and the remaining Nobodies look at each other, unhappy and confused. What happened? Didn't it work? asked one.
It worked for some, a Sniper replies. But- It cuts itself off and aims for a Heartless that has just appeared.
Something must have gone wrong, says a Sorcerer.
Interference? asks a Dusk, concern in each line of its movement.
Perhaps…
Normally they would not do this, but they are confused, and puzzled, and so they reach out to the mind of the First. There is no response, though; not even a sense of reprimand that they have reached out and tried to communicate first.
Something must be wrong… says a Dusk, and shudders. This is a bad turn for them all.
What do we do now? another wonders.
A Samurai draws its swords. What we can, it says. Find the problem, and deal with it.
Gotta make sure we come out first, a Sniper says, and starts in on the nearest group of Heartless.
