Challenge: [133] Triumph and Tragedy
Title: Her Prince
Word Count: 402
Spoilers: KH2
Rating: G
Summary: He was nothing like her storybooks.

Every waking moment was an opportunity to dream.

In the evenings, she’d sit cross-legged with her old storybooks open on her lap, and run her fingers across old, weathered pages with lush fantasies carefully etched onto paper. They were only stories, she realized. But it was hard to resist the idea of a prince out there somewhere, destined to meet with her someday, and leading her into a romance that would blossom into something unlike anything she’d ever find in her storybooks.

Her prince began to take form in her dreams. He was soft-spoken, but she could see entire worlds in his eyes, as if he had traveled the universe without ever leaving their quiet town. Like the men in her stories, he was a skilled combatant, and when she closed her eyes she saw him defeat champions with ease and fluid, graceful movements.

In her stories, the prince always won the heart of a princess. She was nothing of the sort, but whenever he smiled at her, whenever his bright blue eyes lit up when she walked to him, or whenever he ran a hand through his blond hair awkwardly when he looked at her, she knew he didn’t care that she wasn’t a princess. She wondered if he even knew he was a prince.

Her friends found the idea of her dream prince silly, and despite herself, she agreed with them. Summer continued, and while she relished each dream when she met with him, his presence in her heart was fading. In sleep, her prince dwindled until he was only a silhouette, a forgotten shadow she only glimpsed at out of the corner of her eye, if he was even there anymore.

He was gone, and Olette was caught up in reality again. She didn’t think too much of it when Hayner suggested they go see the new kid off, so she went without a word.

She walked into the station. Sora looked up at her, and Olette saw entire worlds in his bright blue eyes. Her mouth was dry, and while she grasped for words she couldn’t speak; she couldn’t beg him to stay, to tell him that she loved him.

Her prince was leaving. He was no longer a dream, but like in her storybooks, Olette knew he was destined for someone else, someone far more worthy than her. She went home, and never dreamed of him again.

Poor Olette. I never give her much thought during gaming and this really does open new perspectives.
