Challenge: [164] Best Friend
Title: Fragments of Memories
Word Count: 451
Summary: Have you ever found yourself missing someone you’ve never even met?
“Your face is gonna get stuck that way, you know.”
Pence glances up in surprise to see Hayner looking at him archly. He grins back. “Sorry... Guess I was kinda lost in thought.”
“Where the heck did you go?” Hayner asked him, leaning casually against the wall of the clocktower. “It’s usually not like you to look so introspectacle.”
“I don’t think ‘introspectacle’ is a word, Hayner.” His friend’s raised eyebrow lets Pence know he’s avoiding the subject.
“I had that dream again last night,” he finally admits. “The one I told you about yesterday?”
Hayner looks at him sideways. “The one about Sora? You had it again?” He grins. “I didn’t know you were into guys, Pence.”
Pence chuckles, a little uncomfortably. “No, no...” he says, awkwardly rubbing the back of his head. “It’s not like that. It wasn’t Sora this time-- it was someone else. He kinda looked like Sora, now that I think about it. We were all hanging out here, just like we are now, and he was sitting...” He points. “...over there, next to you, Olette.” Olette glances behind her as if she fully expects to see someone there.
“I can’t remember if we talked about anything,” Pence goes on, “and I don’t think he smiled at all in the dream, but...” His face is almost uncharacteristically serious. “I got the same feeling that I got when we first met Sora-- that we’d known him for a long time.”
He waits for Hayner to laugh; to tell him he’s crazy, but he doesn’t. Carefree, easygoing Hayner has a look in his eyes that’s almost nostalgic. “What was his name?” he asks.
Pence thinks for a minute. “It started with an ‘R’... ‘Rock’ or something like that.”
“...Roxas?” Olette guesses.
Pence brightens. “Yeah! That was it.” He blinks, surprised. “How’d you know that?”
Olette shrugs, looking just as nonplused. “I dunno. It just... popped into my head, I guess.”
“Roxas...” Hayner murmurs, and with that the three lapse into silence, letting their feet dangle over the ledge. After a while, Hayner breaks the silence once again. “Hey, Pence... In the dream, were we friends? With Roxas, I mean. Did we get along?”
Pence shrugs. “It was kinda hard to tell. Like I said, he never smiled. But... yeah, I think we liked him. I think we liked him a lot.”
There are no attempts at conversation after that-- they merely watch the horizon darken in the fading sunlight and finish their ice cream. And even though they never speak of it, each of them know that they’re all sharing the same feeling-- a feeling of wistfulness that has very little to do with the summer’s approaching end.
