Title: Fade
Wordcount: 415
Notes: Takes place after KH2. I feel like I have sinned, doing this to them...
Today is the first day of spring. Not officially - not by any calender. Sora has decided this for himself. The painfully bright sun in the beautiful blue sky, with fluffy white clouds all around. The cool, misty breeze, and dew on the grass. This is what Sora thinks spring should be. It helps that today is the first day it hasn't rained in a week.
He thinks about this, staring out the classroom window with half-lidded eyes, sitting at his desk. He rests his head on his hand, and listens. The clock ticks by another hour. School has been out for three. The sun is beginning to set; all the blues and whites are becoming purples and pinks. He prefers blue.
Kairi finds him like this, and seeing that he's looking away, proceeds to do her best ninja-immitation. It was chance that she came, really. She'd left a text book in her desk, and needed it for her homework.
Then again, they've always been pulled to each other. Where one went, the other two were sure to eventually, coincidentally, pop up. They rarely had an explanation, but always made the most of it. So Kairi sneaks up on Sora, pressing herself up against the walls.
When she reaches his side, she reaches out to poke his shoulder, to startle him. In one smooth motion, he grabs her wrist before she makes it; not looking away from the window for a second. She thinks she sees a shimmering near his other hand. They both freeze; the moment lasts far too long before Sora turns to her, looking curious as he lets go of her bruised wrist.
"Sorry, Kairi. Reflex."
"Mm, it's fine."
She waits until he looks away to rub her wrist.
Gravity has pulled them to each other. She would like to tell herself that nothing has changed. But she and Sora do not turn this chance-meeting into an energetic play-date. Sora does not stand quickly, and demand they race to the gates. Sora does not steal her bag and threaten to copy her homework. Sora does not laugh. Sora does not so much as smile. Riku does not step through the doorway next, drawn to them as if by magic, and demand to know why they're here of all places. Riku does not so much as smile lately, either.
Kairi finds her textbook, and dismisses herself quietly. They are not drifting apart, but they are not drifting together anymore, and Kairi thinks that is far worse.

Anyway, very well done! Good luck!
