notes: I actually love Mulan. She's my favorite Disney girl ever.

Mulan pours their tea with the grace her movement in battle had promised, before returning to her seat and curling her pale fingers around her own cup, and smiles.

“It is very good to see you again,” she tells Sora, with a rich warmth in her voice. Her hair is growing long again, now gently pinned into a bun. Underneath her silks Sora can see the ripple of muscle, still, but something in her is calmer now, more restrained.

“Yeah, you too.” He sips his tea and speaks, “So, uh, how’s it been? Have the Heartless come back?”

“Quiet,” she giggles. “For a few weeks after the closing of the doors, some remained, but now we have only the Huns to keep us busy.” Her levity is gone as quickly as it appeared; she busies herself with refilling their cups, and Sora waits for her to finish before he speaks.

“Mulan, what’s wrong? You sound so sad.” Sora leans over the table, reaching to grasp her hands in his. They are no longer callused.

“Oh, no. Things are just different. Not,” she hurries to add, “that I wish the Heartless were back. The Huns are cruel, but at least it’s a cruelty we can understand. What those monsters did, I still can’t believe it.”

“Bu you know how to fight. You could help!”

“Things are different now, Sora. There is a new emperor, and order has been restored.” Mulan shrugs. “It is a small price to pay.”

“Your freedom?” Sora practically shouts, wants to shake her but doesn’t know what that will do to the delicate porcelain of the woman now before him.

“My people, my country, my world is safe now. And I am not so unhappy as you would think.”

“You could be so much more!” He pounds his fists on the table, stands and waits.

“Sora,” Mulan begins, walking to his side and curling her fingers around his chin, “this is not about me.” Fire in her voice again, her fingers grip stronger than Sora expected. “We cannot all be both dutiful and selfish.” She releases him and picks up the pot from the table. Her smile is steady, and maybe a bit sad, and genuine. Sora sits.

“Now, more tea?”

An excellent, somber drabble that is very telling of Confucian values, something that most fans of Disney's Mulan overlook.

This sentence: Her smile is steady, and maybe a bit sad, and genuine
sounds slightly awkward. Otherwise, I really love what you did with this. As sad as it is, I...still prefer this to Mulan 2 ^^;;
