Challenge: 200 All You Did (Was Save My Life)
Title: Weapon
Word Count: 394
Notes: To save someone's life is an incredible feat, made possible only when one has the right tools to do so. A tribute to the real heroes.
Weapon
It chose him. Completely by coincidence, by chance. He didn't ask for it. Hell, he didn't even want it. He threw it away so many times. Thrust it aside in the dirt, watched it skitter away. But like a beaten dog, it came back every time, glowing bright and forcing its way back in his hand. Like some terrible destiny he wanted no part of. To be the shadow of a keyblade master was worse than nonexistence itself.
It's heavy, but to him, it's never been a burden. He treats it with respect because it is more than a blade—it's his partner, his closest teammate. His right arm. His living legacy. Even at times when he believes the damned thing is cursed, his obligation to carry it is much greater than any feeling or superstition. It's the memory that keeps him drawing his sword.
Wielding a sword like his could be tricky. And mastering it, at first, was...difficult. There were many like it, but this one was his. He had bled at the blade of one, had been scarred, and the evidence would be forever etched into his face. He'd never felt any contempt for it though, even when it had failed him. He never blamed the sword. Because it had saved his life. More than once. And he would just have to keep growing stronger until he was worthy of its sacrifice.
It was both powerful and dangerous, he knew that much. Where it came from was a mystery, and there were many things about it that he was sure he would never understand. It came to his aid when he needed it most, and he could always feel it, in the back of his mind. A reassuring presence of protection and camaraderie. They had fought many battles together, and while he knew he had acquired a great deal of skill in his travels, it was the sleek and firm steel in his hand that kept him alive. Kept him from succumbing to darkness.
They can come in any form, a gun, or a sword, and without their owners, they're nothing. Just pieces of perfectly carved metal, sharp and deadly, but useless without the skill and fortitude it takes to bear their weight.
For a weapon is only as strong as the hands that wield it. And the hearts that guide it.
