Challenge : 201 Teachers
Title : Guiding Hand
Word Count : 400
Notes : The thoughts of one of his many mentors.
He wasn't the kid's father.
“Keep your head up.” Leon advised, correcting the boy's posture with one hand under his chin. He took a few measured steps backwards, blunt side of his gunblade turned outward for the boy's own safety. “Eyes off the ground, Sora.”
He wasn't his guardian either. Only a minor promise had him even remotely obligated to watch out for his well-being.
Sora nodded eagerly and stood up straighter, gripping the hilt of his weapon with both hands. Leon had neither the heart nor the courage to tell him that his stance was a little exaggerated, raising his hand to his mouth under the disguise of clearing his throat, if only to hide the fond smile he could hardly repress.
“Like this?” Sora questioned, jutting his chest out a little far. For the sake of the lesson, Leon kept those kinds of criticisms to himself, rather than compromise his confidence. If that was even possible.
“That's fine.”
Leon could barely even call himself his teacher. Sora had the potential to be a fine warrior, and it hardly mattered who gave the instruction; he would surely blossom under anyone's guiding hand.
Sora was gravely inexperienced, though, and Shiva knows Leon had the most expertise when it came to training regiments and discipline, so naturally it fell on his shoulders to show the underage wielder the ropes. And for the most part, it was a rewarding experience.
To be his age, despite the immense responsibility of playing a role more fit for an adult, Sora never ceased to impress Leon with his boundless enthusiasm and conviction. Even at times when his limited attention span had the both of them practically tearing their hair out, Sora still had an incredible capacity to learn.
It took hours of childish complaining and a well-worn and long-suffering amount of patience on Leon's part, but it was clear the boy was gradually improving with every session. He could move faster, strike harder. His defense was nearly impeccable.
And of course, there was the unabashed cheering. “Yes! Did you see that? How I blocked at the last minute? That rocked! Just wait until I use that in battle! Look out, Heartless!”
“Relax.” Leon told him, and he didn't mean to smile, but it had already slipped and it really was futile to pretend otherwise. “Let's run it again.”
