“You,” said the witch, “are not Roxas.”
Roxas tugged at his restraints and glared up at her. “Why don’t you believe me? That’s my name!”
“For one, I don’t believe Roxas was ever so young as you are.” She said this with a sharp, slow smile, as though thirteen was a synonym for delicious. Roxas shuddered. “For another, the true Roxas would never be in this position.” Roxas looked behind him, at the locked shackles binding his hands and feet together.
“I’m just a kid,” Roxas whimpered. “I live in Radiant Garden… or, I did… then these shadow things came…”
“And yet,” the witch went on, ignoring him, “there is a certain resemblance.” She walked in a slow circle around him. As she moved behind him, Roxas saw Dewey slowly dropping from the ceiling, dangling on the end of a rope. His brothers would be in the rafters lowering him down. He had been behind the witch; now if she looked up she would see him.
“P-please,” Roxas stammered, sounding like he was starting to cry, “don’t hurt me, I’ll do whatever you want!”
“Oh,” the witch crooned, “it won’t hurt at all.” Roxas shuddered. The witch smiled.
Then the door banged in. “Maleficent! Let the kid go!” Max’s voice cracked on the last word.
“The squire?” Maleficent raised her hand, over Roxas’ head. “Oh, you little fool…”
Roxas concentrated, and his keyblade flashed into his left hand. He thought he’d have to touch the blade to his shackles, but they all just clicked off at once. He tried to jump to his feet, but his legs were sore and stiff, and all he managed to do was roll sideways on the floor.
Huge thorned vines were growing out of Maleficent’s shadow, twining around her arm and shooting toward Max.
Dewey pointed his staff, and Roxas pointed his keyblade.
“Blizzara!”
“Reflect!”
The witch was fast: she almost dodged Dewey’s bolt of ice. It grazed her shoulder and went straight on toward Max. Then it bounced off Roxas’ Reflect spell, and hit Maleficent right in the face. Even better, the vines bounced back, too, and wrapped around Maleficent instead of Max. Max crashed into her shield first, and knocked her right on her bony witch butt. Roxas climbed to his feet and put the keyblade at her throat. “Who is Roxas? Where’s my – where’s Sora?” He’d almost said “my dad.”
“Well,” Maleficent said, sounding just as arrogant as she had when Roxas was the one tied up. “I’ll be ready for you next time, boy.” For a moment everything was shadow, and then the witch was a flock of ravens, flying out of the bonds and getting away.
“Dang it!” Roxas stamped his foot and shouted at the ceiling. “Aaaaah!”
“We made her run away,” Max said. “Maleficent never runs away. Roxas, that was amazing.”
“Who cares? There really is another Roxas and she knew about him and she got away!”
“Does it really matter who you were named after?” Dewey asked, as Huey and Louie lowered him to the floor. His full name was Deuteronomy Duck – as far as he was concerned, the truth about people’s names could just stay hidden.
“It’s the key to everything,” Roxas said. “I can feel it.” He thumped a hand against his chest.
Max looked up at the windows where the black birds had flown. “So, what do we do now?”
“Search the castle, I guess. There’s probably a keyhole around here, and… maybe we’ll find something.” Roxas looked down at the Kingdom Key in his hand. “I’ll find you, Dad. I promise.”

Date: 2011-01-12 06:21 am (UTC)"Well, yeah, but then someday I'd get an ice spike to the head." Max stared, like he couldn't believe Roxas had said that.
"Haha! Buuuurn!" Huey laughed, like Roxas had meant to insult Max.
Roxas blushed. "Um, that came out wrong. I mean..." He racked his brains for a more appropriate answer. "If I do mess up the Reflect, I can't cast Life on myself?" No, that didn't help. Max just looked grumpier. "I'd have to cast Reflect on you anyway so Dewey might as well use it?"
"So I'm clumsy, too?"
Desperate, Roxas had one more idea: "Um... I thought it'd make you feel useful?"
All three ducks were laughing their tails off. Even Max let out a wry chuckle. "Sure, Roxas. I feel really appreciated."
Roxas buried his head in his arms, blushing to the tips of his ears.

Date: 2011-01-31 05:58 pm (UTC)The idea of Max as the knight cracks me up.
His full name was Deuteronomy Duck – as far as he was concerned, the truth about people’s names could just stay hidden. This line FTW. ^__^
