Title: The Letter and the Spirit.
Word Count: 349.
Spoilers: None.
Characters: Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White, Alice, Jasmine, Belle, Kairi.
Summary: When gathered together, they grant the power to rule all worlds.
Aurora stood with the irrevocability of an indrawn breath. The right moment had come. The weight of her husband’s sword and shield was familiar now, comfortable, as she belted and buckled them on.
Cinderella’s soft shoes made no sound on the red carpeting. Once, she had walked along just such a carpet in the dress of a princess, sure that the evening would change everything. Now she wore her ordinary clothes and was more princess than she had ever been.
Snow White put down the apple she was eating. She had refused to allow her stepmother to ruin the taste for her. Especially not now, of all times.
Alice was having an impassioned conversation with herself as she hurried through the halls, over whether nights ate lights – or if, on the other hand, lights ate nights. She couldn’t quite recall just at the moment which way around it was supposed to be.
Jasmine turned toward the Keyhole, drawn like a needle to a lodestone, dark eyes shining. She could feel a whole new world around her, on the point of coming into being, like golden sand in the air.
Belle would not merely drop a book under any circumstances. Instead, she tucked it into the exact proper place on its shelf and left the library as neat as she had found it.
Kairi was the last to arrive. She walked confidently, head held high, smooth as if she did not share in the musical tension thrumming through them all, like a princess. She was smiling.
They all were. Without anyone saying any word, giving any order, they drifted together into a circle drawn in the meeting of full skirts and long hair and sharp elbows and bright eyes. Kairi held out her callused right hand. Belle covered it with her slender one. Jasmine’s joined them, dark, then Alice with bitten nails, and Snow White painfully fair, and Cinderella with knobbed knuckles. Last of all as she had been first, Aurora laid her soft hand atop the rest.
And the worlds opened before them like petals unfurling from a flower.
