Challenge: [263] Bad Guys
Title: Rough Around the Edges
Word Count: 396
Notes: I promised more Firefly, so... Takes place in the same, mangled 'verse as this.
 

The best thing about this world so far was seeing the look on Sora's face when Cobb pulled a gun from his waist and said, “Let's go be bad guys.” Seriously, Riku almost laughed out loud. The younger boy gawked and sputtered, “B-bad guys? But we're the good guys!” 

 “Not this time, ain't,” Cobb replied. “You got a problem with that, kid?” 
 
Riku interjected, because they didn't have time for Sora to play 'Morality Police.' “All your captain is hiring us to do is take out Heartless so that you can get your job done. That's all we will do.” 
 
“But, Riku,” Kairi tried to reply, “what if they really are bad guys?” 
 
Riku doesn't know how to tell them that, sometimes, bad guys have the best intentions. He thinks about his younger self, his drive to save his friends driving him into the deepest darkness. Then there was Axel, willing to do whatever it took to see his best friend again—Riku could respect that. But Sora and Kairi have a hard time understanding these things, not because they're naïve, but to them things are black and white, and their hearts don't allow them to see issues that are a little rough around the edges. 
 
“We won't let them do anything too horrible, Kairi. But remember, our first priority is finding the keyhole.” 
 
Footsteps echoed on the metal walk above them. “Your first priority is the job I'm paying you for, then you can find your fancy lock. I don't need them creatures swarming my crew while you're off finding the hole for those fancy like keys.” They looked up to see Captain Reynolds, checking his own firearms. 

“Don't worry, sir! We won't let anything happen to you or your crew!” Kairi answered. “Our real first priority is protecting those that need it from the Heartless.” 

“Good to hear it,” the captain said, coming down to their level with his first mate by his side, pushing the button to open up the ship. “Looks like we're ready then.” 

“Let's go be good guys!” Sora cried, pumping his Keyblade up in the air and heading for land while Kairi cheered him on. Riku followed them, laughing. Correction, the best thing about this world so far was seeing Reynold's face at his friends' exuberance.

Yes, yes you did! The comment you made on the other entry definitely stayed in my mind, and I told myself that I'd try to work all of that into the bigger story. Well, the bigger story is trying to kill my brain, but when I saw the prompt this popped right into my head. I even tried to write something else, but Jayne wouldn't let me.
