Challenge: [268] If I Never Knew You
Title: Never Going Home
Word Count: 585
Notes: End-game BBS spoilers. First entry ever! I had to cut out some stuff to fit the word limit, so if anyone wants to see the director's cut, it's on my journal. I just don't think you can vote based on content from it... :? Anyway, the character who doesn't exist in this universe is Kairi. (Maybe you would've figured that out.) Enjoy!
“This is nice.”
“Yeah.”
Sora dug into the sand, sifting the cool grains between his fingers. Staring over the waters, he felt the wind tousle his hair and relaxed into it. He wouldn’t have thought the Realm of Darkness would have such pleasant things as moonlit oceans and breezes.
They didn’t say anything for a long time. It was a deep silence, thoughts and feelings buzzing in the air between them. Sora felt words at the tip of his tongue, constantly at the edge of speaking. But whenever he was about to open his mouth, he would realize he didn’t know what he was going to say. He sort of felt Riku was feeling the same thing, so it was alright.
What must have been hours and hours later, Riku finally shifted. Sora glanced at him. “What is it?”
Riku hummed, then turned to look at him full in the face. “Are you actually okay with not going home?”
Surprised, Sora stifled a “huh?” and thought seriously about it, for Riku’s sake.
Never seeing the Destiny Islands again. Tidus, Selphie, Wakka, and his parents were the only people worth going back to, but then, he’d been perfectly happy all this time and not seeing them. At the back of his mind, Sora hoped they were happy without them. He would miss their little island with the paopu grove, but looking back, he realized the memories were tainted with competition with Riku and what that had led to.
“Yes,” his mouth said faster than his mind could confirm his final answer. He decided that was true. “Yes, I’m totally fine with it. I don’t mind. This - ” he gestured at the ocean, “ - is close enough to what was the best about it, y’know?”
Riku looked at him a long moment, then turned back to the beach with a small smile on his face. “Yeah.”
Back to that comfortable quiet.
-
Sora felt older. That was crazy. They could have been sitting here for a day or for months. It all felt the same. Was he sixteen now?
He turned to Riku. “Hey. Do you think I’m sixteen now?”
Riku tilted his head for a second, then shook his head. “I doubt it’s been that long.”
“I bet you’re seventeen now.”
“Hm.”
-
In the beginning, the darkness had seemed peaceful. Quiet. Lovely. The longer they sat there, the more Sora felt immense pressure on him. Not a physical pressure, but an emotional one. Spiritual.
“Have you noticed it’s really difficult to say anything here?” asked Riku. “Especially anything important?”
Sora nodded. “Yeah. I can’t...” He trailed off.
The darkness pressed.
-
After another long stretch had passed (a single day? months? years?), Riku and Sora jolted out of their quiet companionship when they heard footsteps approaching from behind them. They jumped to their feet to see a woman in blue approaching them.
She seemed just as startled to see them and stopped in her tracks, raising a hand defensively.
“Who’re you?” asked Riku.
She stepped into the light of the moon and Sora’s heart abruptly seized. He saw her and wanted to run up and hug her and tell her everything and be in her arms forever because he knew her. His mind froze when he tried to think of her name except that it was blue and water and -
“Aqua.”
“I know you!” Sora’s mouth took over for him.
Aqua stared hard at them, then slowly, her hand covered her mouth as recognition lit her face.

Date: 2011-07-21 05:35 am (UTC)But anyway, yours... this is really great. That dark beach just weighs in my imagination - it was such a strangely contented place. I love reading about it, and you use it really well here. Thanks for writing!

Date: 2011-07-21 08:00 pm (UTC)Yours is really nice. Kinda peaceful yet spooky at the same time (although having never played BBS, I've no idea about the ending).
Good luck!
