Challenge: [98] Mother
Title: Together
Word Count: 544
Spoilers/Notes: Takes place in a big long fic that I've yet to write but the scene in my head seemed to work for this prompt and I WANTED TO BE DIFFERENT K *vague spoilers for Kh2, I suppose*
Characters: Sora, Kairi, Riku, King Mickey
"Sorry," Kairi says when she enters King Mickey's office, "I'm late." Through her training and classes they have become too close for honorifics, though Sora still calls the mouse 'your majesty' in jest. Riku, however, down right refuses to drop the respectful terms. The mouse glances up from his desk, though it hardly comes to Kairi's thigh, and his head bobbles up to meet her eyes.
"There wasn't really a specific time you said ya needed to talk to me, Kairi." He says, and smiles. "You know you can see me any time; I'm never too busy for ya." He glances past Kairi and catches Sora and Riku slipping in the door. They are treading lightly but tagging along after the red-head and eventually they step up to stand behind her.
"Ah, no," Kairi says, and stumbles over her words for a moment before repeating, "I'm late."
The boys wear matching looks of guilt, and examine their shoes, and wow, that is a lovely reflection - those brooms must be working very hard, don't you think?
Mickey just stares, and after a moment, blinks. He is surprised, but doesn't look embarrassed to hear it. "I see." Her classes are nearly through, and she will be moving to Radiant Garden within two months. "How long has it been?"
Now Kairi blushes, and decides that she needs to enjoy the clean floor as much as the other two. "This is the second month. I just thought it was - I don't know. A fluke or something, the first month. But..."
"I can't leave again so soon; I've hardly been back in the castle for a year. But... Minnie'll go with you. Maybe continue your classes and help you with the baby."
The boys wince at the word, as if they hadn't really thought past this is bad and gotten to the fact that more was going to happen. The king had practically forgotten them, and glances over - trying not to be amused at how embarrassed Riku looks. Sora looks pretty red-faced too, however, and this prompts Mickey to ask "Which of you is to blame?" though the question lacks any malice, and the comforting, friendly smile doesn't waver.
They share a glance, and Kairi looks at them over her shoulder, blush deepening.
"Not sure," Riku and Kairi say, and Sora mumbles a "Don't know," out of their unison.
Again, the small king has to keep the amusement out of his tone and off his face, and says "Then congratulations, all of you," before politely turning back to the paperwork on his desk.
As they walk down the hall - all of them awkward but dealing with it, determined to be comfortable with one another - King Mickey hears their voices echoing off the walls of the vast rooms and back to his sensitive ears.
Sora says "I guess we'll see in six months which of us, uh. Was, uh, you know."
and hushed, Kairi corrects "seven months," then begins to add "it doesn't matter which of you it was anywa--" but cuts herself off shyly.
After a long pause, Riku's voice catches the King's ear. It is the most quiet of the three, but Mickey smiles to hear the wistful, somehow warm tone he uses when he finally announces to himself, "Kairi is going to be a mother."

Date: 2007-03-14 10:04 am (UTC)It's just sweet and Mickey's really cool like that. Nothing phases him. I love that this is a OT3 fic as well.
Just something. Last paragraph, should be 'wistful'. No 'h' in it.

Date: 2007-03-14 02:19 pm (UTC)I absolutely MUST have the rest of this fic. I must, I must, I must, because if this excerpt is any indication, it will be STUNNING. I don't care if the rest isn't done yet; I will beta-read it for you as you write it, or whatever else you want. Feed me excerpt-scraps, I do not care.
Your characterization of teenage awkwardness and the trio's feel of we are so screwed and Mickey's wonderful, perfectly-on-the-spot paternal amusement creates a marvelously endearing scene. There are a few punctuation errors, and wistful doesn't take an h, but besides those tiny things--I am in love with this piece.
Bravo! =D *applauds* Very original.
